Make Room for Family Photos in Your Wedding Timeline

Family photographs deserve a place in the wedding timeline before the day arrives. A little preparation helps everyone know where to be and leaves more room to enjoy the celebration.
Start with the people
Make a short list of the family groupings that matter most to you. Use names instead of relying only on descriptions such as “the cousins.” Let your photographer know privately about sensitive family situations or anyone who needs extra help getting to the portrait location.
You do not need to plan every candid photograph. This list is for the combinations you want to be sure we organize.
Choose a meeting place
A timeline that says “family photos after the ceremony” still leaves a few questions unanswered. Where should everyone go? Who needs to stay nearby? Is there a place for older relatives to sit while they wait?
Coordinate the location with your photographer, planner and venue. Consider walking distance, shade, access and what happens if the weather changes. Share the plan with the people on the list before the wedding.
Ask someone who knows the family to help
A relative or friend who recognizes the people on your list can help gather each group. That gives the photographer more time to arrange and photograph everyone, instead of trying to work out who is missing.
Where practical, plan the order around the comfort of young children, older relatives and anyone with accessibility needs.
Leave room between events
A ceremony can run long. Guests may need time to move, and travel between locations can take longer than the drive itself. Discuss these transitions before setting portrait time directly against the next scheduled event.
There is no single portrait-time allowance that fits every wedding. The number of groupings, locations and people involved all matter. Share your list so we can plan around your actual day.
